Do I Need Car Insurance if I Have a Learner’s Permit?
Every driver, even those with learner’s permits, are required to have car insurance. You have a few options when it comes to how you want to set up your policy. You can:
- Have your own car insurance policy
- Be carried on your parent’s insurance policy
- Be on your parent’s policy until you get your driver’s license and then get your own.
If you’re wondering why you need insurance if you’re not officially licensed as a driver, consider this: you’re in charge of a two-ton vehicle (even if your parents are in the car). If you were to cause an accident, you would be responsible for the damages you cause. As a teen, you probably don’t have thousands of dollars to pay for medical and car damage, do you? So having car insurance is the safest way to protect yourself in case you do get in an accident.
Every car insurance company is different. Some may require that a learner’s permit driver be on the same policy as someone who is fully licensed. Other companies may not charge to have a permit driver on a policy. Still others may require a driver with a permit to get their driving license within 30 days of getting a car insurance policy. Some car insurance companies won’t even insure teen drivers or teens with learner’s permits, as they are at a higher risk of getting into an accident. Check with your insurance agent to see what the specifications are for you.
Be aware that insuring teens, whether they have a permit or a full license, can be costly: as much as double what it costs to insure another age group. Click on the Get a Quote link above to see how much you can save on learner’s permit car insurance right here on CheaperCarInsurance.com.
